Natural Hair Mask

Did you know you can make a mask for your hair as well as your face?

Our ultimate make-your-own Face Mask Kit has 3 kinds of clay, one of which is perfect for hair.

Green French clay, also known as bentonite clay, makes a great mask for the hair and scalp.

Why put a face mask on your hair?

While it’s a bit messier than doing a mask on your face, your hair does gather up it’s fair share of toxins.

Hair dyes, hair products like hair spray, gels, straightening lotions and even shampoo and conditioner itself can cause build up of toxins on your hair.

Bentonite clay can detox the hair, by drawing out toxins and retaining the moisture in the scalp and skin at the same time.

Making your own hair mask means you can make it fresh as needed with no added preservatives.

For hair and scalp, you can make the clay mask a little more watery than the consistency for the face.

Preparation: use on hair that has no products on it at the time. Oily hair is quite fine to use the clay mask.

You will need:

  1. medium size clay bowl – small rice bowl is perfect size
  2. wooden scoop /spoon or stirrer
  3. bentonite /green french clay – approx 20-30g
  4. either: green tea or herbal tea of your choice

Method:

  1. Prepare a pot of strong green tea or herbal tea (Chamomile, mint is perfect for hair) and let it cool slightly. In my hair mask in the photos below, I’ve used a mix of half green tea and half herbal tea of chamomile and mint.
  2. Place 5 heaped teaspoons of green french clay (bentonite clay) into your ceramic pot. Avoid touching the clay with anything metal.
  3. Mix in the cooled tea a little at a time to form a consistency that is slightly more watery than thick. If the mixture is too watery, you can always add a little more clay.
  4. Apply your hair mask to parted hair one section at a time, until all your roots and scalp are covered. Massage the clay gently into the scalp. You may also want to apply the mask to your face at this time as well.
  5. Massage the face mask through the length of the hair as an option.
  6. use your own hair to clean out the mask bowl and soak up all the remaining clay
  7. Pile your hair on on your scalp and cover your scalp with plastic wrap (same as when hair dying) or a scarf as needed.
  8. Leave on your face up to 20 minutes, depending you your known tolerance for clay on your skin.
  9. Leave on your hair for 30 minutes up to 1 hour.
  10. TO remove hair mask, you can either rinse out your hair with warm water into the garden or shower.
  11. You can also use the remaining tea mixture as a hair rinse, following the mask has completeley washed out, you can rinse your hair with the cooled herbal and/or green tea mixture as a way of rinsing the hair.
