COURSE OUTLINE:

Chinese Medicine Diet Therapy (Foods as Medicine) for self-care & Self-Treatment

This is a 12-week course, with a weekly live video training via Zoom.

Each weekly session below is 3 hours.  

Participants can log into the real-time course as well as get access to a recording 24hrs after the course. The recording will be active for 12 months post enrolment. 

All materials needed to do this course are provided. Course notes and handouts are made available for weekly sessions as appropriate. Additional references and reading material suggestions will be made available where applicable.

Session 1 - Digestive Health in Chinese Medicine.

What is a healthy digestion all about in Chinese medicine? How do we know and what can we do to set ourselves up for health no matter what illness life throws at us. Understand Gut-health from the unique lens of Chinese Medicine. Introduction to seasonal eating and health.

Session 2 - The Earth Element

Understand the role of the Earth Element (Spleen & Stomach working together) and how it works with other elements in common digestive pathologies. Introduction to Cooking Methods – pros and cons of all cooking methods discussed.

Session 3 - Properties of foods

Introduction to the properties of foods in Chinese Medicine – Flavour and Function (sour, salty, bitter, pungent & sweet), Thermal Qualities (Hot, warming, cooling, cold) and Properties of tonification and detoxification. By the end of session 3 participants will be able to identify what a healthy diet is for them, be empowered to make good food and cooking choices to support their health or start to  address a pattern of disharmony such as dampness or blood deficiency.

Session 4 - Properties of Fruits & Vegetables

In this session we start to look very detailed at individual foods, starting with common Fruits and Vegetables. Chinese Medicine has a unique way of looking at food properties – Flavours and Functions rather than simply nutritional value.  Students will learn the flavour and function of fruits and vegetables as well as traditional medicinal recipes using fruits and vegetables.

Session 5 - Properties of Meats, Fish & Poultry

A detailed discovery of the flavour and function of common meats, poultries and fish. Chinese Medicine has a unique way of looking at food properties – Flavours and Functions rather than simply nutritional value.  Students will learn the flavour and function of meats, poultry and fish as well as related traditional medicinal recipes.

Session 6 - Properties of Grains, seeds, Nuts & beans

A detailed discovery of the flavour and function of common nuts, seeds and grains from the Chinese Medicine viewpoint.  Learn about Grains, seeds, beans and nuts from a Flavours and Functions perspective rather than simply nutritional value.  Related historical medicinal recipes are included in this session where relevant.

Session 7 - Medicinal Wines & Teas

Learn how to make your own medicinal wines and teas according to the Ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine. Learn how to craft your own recipes, source ingredients, as well as make traditional ones. Recipes included in handouts.

Session 8 - Western Diet does what?

Coffee, Sugar, Fast-foods, take aways, packet foods, Alcohol, Treats & More – Learn about the impact to our body from a Chinese medicine perspective about common western diet habits. How to achieve a balance where you can enjoy life and obtain your healing goals.

Session 9 - What diet is right for me?

Analysing common modern diet trends / lifestyle practices from a Chinese medicine perspective – Intermittent fasting, paleo diet, Vegan diet, Vegetarian diet and more.

Session 10 - Foods as medicine for Babies & Children

Learn about keeping kids healthy, and treating common illnesses with foods. Avoiding foods or adding foods, cooking methods for children and babies, also covered is a guide of how to wean babies according to the Chinese Medicine system, which promotes longevity and health in life

Session 11 - Women's Health - Postpartum (After birth), Pregnancy and Menstrual Health using foods as medicine

Medicinal use foods play an enormous role in women’s health. Food based treatments combining meats with blood tonic herbs for instance have appeared in classical texts as old as 2000 years ago in the Han Dynasty. Specific diets to support pregnancy and birth as well as health throughout the menstrual cycle, supporting transitions to menopause and menstrual disorders such as endometriosis, PCOS, heavy bleeding and more are covered.

Session 12 - Longevity & Seasonal Eating

Learn how to eat well for your entire life. Chinese Medicine believes humans should live 100 healthy years. Support your health throughout the seasons of life, transitions of life and the four seasons of each year with the wisdom Marie will share in this lesson. This lesson will also focus on Anti-aging and longevity practices for better energy, sleep, flexibility and skin.

Marie Hopkinson

Chinese Herbalist & Acupuncturist

Marie is an experienced Chinese Medicine practitioner both a herbalist and acupuncturist. Initially studying in Perth, Marie went on to study at Hangzhou TCM Hospital and then completing a Masters of International Health at Curtin Uni. In recent years Marie has been studying Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine, taught by Arnaud Versluys through ICEAM.  

Marie has 21 years experience in treating patients working full-time in clinical practice since 2001. 

 

Marie is also a lecturer in Chinese Medicine and social science, teaching at both university level and designing short courses for practitioners and laypeople in Chinese medicine at TAFE’s and private colleges over the years.  and has taught hundreds of hours as well as over 10 years supervising multiple acupuncture student practitioners at once as a clinical supervisor. 

Marie established a youtube channel, The Chinese Medicine Podcast to spread the self help aspects of Acupressure, diet therapy and understanding how Chinese medicine works to a worldwide audience. The channel now has over 5000 subscribers, and a growing audience on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
