COURSE OUTLINE:

Foundational Concepts of Chinese Medicine

This is a 12-week course, with a weekly session on each topic recorded as a live online session. 

Each session below is 3 hours.  

Participants can log into the course at any time and complete the learning over a 12-month period from the date of purchace. 

All materials needed to do this course are provided. Course notes and handouts are made available for weekly sessions as appropriate. Additional references and reading material suggestions will be made available where applicable.

SESSION 1 - History of tCM & Utility of self help

What is Chinese medicine really about? – Brief history, Treatment methods used and diagnosis systems used. Identification of key areas where self-help and preventative treatments are needed and when to seek help of a practitioner.

Session 2 - Yin and Yang

Yin and yang is more than a symbol, its a way of understanding health, harmony, balance and imbalance in our natural world as well as our body. This course has a specific focus on the utiity of yang as function, and how its deficiency is linked to ageing and long term chronic illness. Understanding which leads to prevention and anti-aging practices.

Session 3 - the Five Elements

What are the Five Elements and associated systems. You will learn the element systems, and their cycles in health and disharmony to prepare you to live more in harmony with nature as well as be aware of detection of imbalance in your own self. The relationship between physical and emotional health are discussed.

Session 4 - Zang Fu organs pt 1

Zang Fu is the Chinese name for the Yin and Yang organs of the Chinese medicine system. these are related to the 5 Elements in pairs. Understanding their function is essential in making the right diagnosis for Chinese medicine practitioners. The purpose of these sessions is to guide self-treatment and recognition of patterns for self-diagnosis and recognition of when to seek professional help of a TCM /CM Doctor.

Session 7 - Cause of Illness

How do we get sick? In Chinese medicine there are only 3 ways, and 2/3 of the causes of illness are preventable. This lesson will take a deep dive into these 3 categories, all their sub-types with particular emphasis on the preventable categories with some self-help protocols added in.

Session 8 - Shang Han Lun system Intro

The Shang Han Lun system of thinking is a unique one. Even TCM schools don’t spend 3 weeks on learning it! This lesson gives an introduction to Zhang Zhong Jing, Classical Chinese medicine and why the Shang han lun system is useful in understanding Chinese medicine and its relation to self help illness.

Session 9 - Shang Han Lun Patterns Pt 1

Recognising Yang Patterns in the Shang Han Lun system. 

Tai yang, Yang Ming and Shao yang are the 3 Yang levels. How do these relate to cold and flu, virus and other illnesses in acute and chronic conditions such as influenza, virus, common cold and post-viral fatigue type illnesses.

Session 10 - Shang Han Lun Patterns Part 2

Recognising Yin Patterns in the Shang Han Lun System. 

Shaoyin, Tai Yin and Jueyin are all “yin conformations” patterns – learn about what that means for you as a person trying to stay healthy, activate self-care protocols and prevent illness in you and your community.

Session 11 - Emotions & Mental health in Chinese medicine

Emotions are one of the 3 main causes of illness. Considered preventable in Chinese medicine, so its worth investigating how physical imbalance can lead to emotional imbalance and visa versa. This lesson will help with both cognitive and physical ways to help EQ, address out of balance emotions, promote calm and peace in your life.

Session 12 - Constitutional Types

Constitution in CM is your genetic makeup – they way you were born. Somewhat irrevocable, each type has pros and cons, positive health benefits and negative health consequences if left to its own devices – Wet /Damp and Dry, Cold and Hot etc. this lesson helps explain why some people struggle with weight (in either direction), are prone to certain illnesses and why some people seem to be able to do “all the wrong things” to their body, yet stay healthy!

Marie Hopkinson

Chinese Herbalist & Acupuncturist

Marie is an experienced Chinese Medicine practitioner both a herbalist and acupuncturist. Initially studying in Perth, Marie went on to study at Hangzhou TCM Hospital and then completing a Masters of International Health at Curtin Uni. In recent years Marie has been studying Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine, taught by Arnaud Versluys through ICEAM.  

Marie has 20 years experience in treating patients working full-time in clinical practice since 2001. 

Marie is also a lecturer in Chinese Medicine and social science, teaching at both university level and designing short courses for practitioners and laypeople in Chinese medicine at TAFE’s and private colleges over the years.  and has taught hundreds of hours as well as over 10 years supervising multiple acupuncture student practitioners at once as a clinical supervisor. 

Marie established a youtube channel, The Chinese Medicine Podcast to spread the self help aspects of Acupressure, diet therapy and understanding how Chinese medicine works to a worldwide audience. The channel now has over 4500 subscribers, and a growing audience on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
